Annual Events/Socials:

David and John Stunda present 2010 Stunda Good Egg Award to Arletta Zelenko
on May 12, 2010 in the Burgettstown Community Library.

100 community members attended this annual event that began in 1980 by the Friends of the Library, as a way of recognizing someone from the community who gives of himself or herself thus making the community and surrounding area a better place to live.  In 1985, the award became the Stunda Good Egg Memorial Award.  After a June 1984 automobile accident tragically claimed the lives of John and Barbara Stunda, the Stunda family requested that the Good Egg award be given in their parents memory.

The late Barbara Stunda, a ceramist, traditionally made a ceramic egg presented to the Good Egg recipient.  Her mother, Ethel Cundiff, also a ceramist, continued the tradition of ceramic eggs until her passing in 1996.  The award has transitioned into a commemorative ceramic plate containing the name of the awardee and a monetary donation to the library by the Stunda family in memory of John and Barbara Stunda.  In addition, this year, the Stunda family presented a wood plaque with engraved brass plates containing the names of all thirty award recipients and plates ready for the next thirty-five years.

Mrs. Zelenko retired in 2009 from her twenty-five year position as librarian of the Burgettstown Community Library.  She had initiated the children’s Story Hour, which continues today, and oversaw the numerous expansions of the physical library.  Speakers at the awards ceremony included daughter Tami Radomski, Shirley Marcucci, James Petrucci, Yvonne Dunmore, Debbie Vraninin and Lynn Hill.  Guests were provided the opportunity to comment on the many positive qualities of Mrs. Z, our forever-in-our-hearts librarian.  Refreshments and fellowship followed the ceremony.

--This is a memorial award presented by the Stunda family in memory of the parents to an individual for giving of themselves in service to other and/or our community and surrounding area.
